Identification of Waste Based on Lean Principles as the Way towards Sustainability of a Higher Education Institution: A Case Study from Indonesia

Lean management has generated new approaches to reduce non-value-adding activities in different sectors of the economy, including higher education systems. principles institutions (HEIs) contribute positively sustainability performance. The current study aims to: (a) assess waste HEIs based on lean and even their potential effect sustainability; (b) establish relationship among wastes; (c) develop a structural model using Interpretative Structural Modeling (ISM); (d) carry out Matrice d’impacts Croisés Multiplication Appliqué Àun Classement (MICMAC) analysis. In Phase 1 this study, identification modes was established. 2, risk assessment each mode conducted waste-Failure Mode Effect Analysis (w-FMEA) technique. 3, ISM-MICMAC used identify relationships critical modes. results showed that eighteen were identified as HEIs—with six being autonomous determinants; four dependent determinants, linkage driver determinants. This is expected help academicians practitioners understand HEI’s types by listing wastes, mapping interrelationship, identifying driving power dependence, proposing mitigation actions. It will also growing body literature highlighting HEIs.
